ChatGPT Market Analysis: Still Number One, With Share Falling on Every Measure
ChatGPT remains the largest AI assistant on every measure I found, but its share is falling, and by how much depends entirely on what is being measured. Published figures for ChatGPT's share in the same months range from 78% down to 46%, because sources count different things.

Share depends on the metric
Measure | ChatGPT | Gemini | Claude | Date |
Chatbot share | 77.9% | 9.9% | 3.2% | July 2026 |
Global web traffic share | 53.9% | 27.9% | 9.2% | May 2026 |
Mobile app share | 46.4% | 27.7% | 10.3% | May 2026 |
US adults' preferred assistant | 33.7% | 18.2% | 6.1% | July 2026 |
The same source puts ChatGPT's web share at 79.0% a year earlier. On that measure it lost about 25 points while Gemini went from roughly 5% to 28%. The mobile app share fell below 50% for the first time in May 2026.
Scale of the main players
Reported user counts use different definitions (weekly versus monthly, standalone app versus embedded).
Platform | Reported users | Note |
ChatGPT | 900M+ weekly; about 1.1B monthly | 1 billion monthly milestone reported June 2026 |
Meta AI | 1.2B monthly | Includes passive encounters inside WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook |
Gemini app | 900M to 1B monthly | Plus about 2 billion monthly users of AI Overviews in Search |
Copilot | 420M monthly | Mostly through Microsoft 365 |
Claude | 72M to 245M monthly | Sources conflict; 245M is a May 2026 estimate |
Perplexity | 45M monthly | About $450M annual recurring revenue (estimate) |
The money
OpenAI's annualised revenue was reported at about $25 billion in the spring and about $40 billion by August 2026, with roughly 50 million paying subscribers. One estimate claims Anthropic's annualised revenue passed OpenAI's in April 2026 at $47 billion, and that Claude wins about 70% of head-to-head enterprise deals. I could not confirm either from a primary source, and they conflict with the OpenAI figures above, so treat them as unverified. What is well supported is that revenue per user is far higher in enterprise and API than in consumer chat.
Pricing ladder
The ladder runs Free; Go at about $4.50 a month (Rs 399 in India); Plus at $20; Pro at $100 (added April 2026) and $200; then Business and Enterprise. At the bottom of the market, DeepSeek V4 is reported at $0.14 per million tokens, about one eighth of GPT-5.5's price, which pressures API margins.
Market growth
One estimate says users were on pace to download nearly 2.3 billion AI apps and spend over $4.2 billion on them in the first half of 2026 alone.
Three fights at once
ChatGPT competes on three fronts. On distribution, Google (Android, Search, Jio), Meta (WhatsApp) and Microsoft (Office) reach users without asking them to download anything. On enterprise and coding, Anthropic is strongest, and OpenAI's Codex growth is its answer. On price, DeepSeek and open-weight Indian and Chinese models compete on cost.
Reading it
The category is growing fast enough that ChatGPT can lose share and still gain users. The risk is not shrinking. It is that the largest, most profitable segments, enterprise, coding and bundled distribution, are the ones where rivals are strongest.
