Meta VR Glasses Explained: 100 Grams, 5K Cinema, Xbox Cloud Gaming And A Spring 2027 Launch
Remember when watching a film in 3D meant a trip to the multiplex, a pair of flimsy plastic glasses and a surcharge on your ticket? Meta wants to move that entire experience into your pocket. At Meta Connect 2026 on September 23, the company unveiled Meta VR Glasses, a pair of virtual reality glasses that weigh about 100 grams and promise a private cinema, a courtside seat, a gaming console and a multi-screen workspace, all in something that looks closer to oversized sunglasses than a headset.

Meta describes the product as "a personal cinema, courtside seat, workspace, and gaming console, all in a pair of glasses that weighs about 100 grams." The Meta VR Glasses will be priced at $1,299.99 in the US and are set to go on sale in spring 2027.
What Are Meta VR Glasses?
For years, virtual reality has had one stubborn problem: the hardware is heavy. Headsets strap to your face, press on your cheeks and leave you with a sore neck after a long movie. Meta's answer is to split the device in two. The glasses themselves hold only the displays and sensors, while a separate palm-sized puck carries the processor, battery and storage. The two are connected by an optical tether, and the puck can clip onto a pocket or slip into a bag.
That design is what brings the glasses down to roughly 100 grams, about the weight of a deck of cards. Meta says that makes them five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3, and the video doing the rounds online points out they come in at around a third of the weight of the headsets fans are used to seeing.
A 5K Personal Cinema With IMAX And Dolby
Entertainment is clearly the headline act. The glasses use what Meta calls a 5K Infinite Display built on micro-OLED panels, with ultra-compact pancake lenses delivering 37 pixels per degree. Dolby Vision handles colour and contrast, while Dolby Atmos spatial audio is built right into the frames, so there is no need for separate headphones.
Meta VR Glasses are also the first VR device to be IMAX Enhanced certified, meaning IMAX expanded aspect ratio films can be watched at home the way they were framed for the big screen. Disney+ is bringing 3D movies such as Marvel's The Avengers and Black Panther from November, and the Disney Immersive Cinema by ILM app will let fans watch films like Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: A New Hope in a dedicated immersive format.
The streaming line-up is huge. Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+ are offering 3D catalogues for the first time, and thousands of 3D titles are coming from partners including Prime Video, YouTube, DIRECTV, AMC+, Crunchyroll, Plex, Tubi and Lionsgate. Anime fans, Marvel loyalists and weekend binge-watchers all have something to look forward to. Meta has also partnered with director James Cameron and Lightstorm Vision to bring blockbusters to 3D for the first time in 2027.
Courtside Seats Without Leaving The Sofa
Sports fans get their own upgrade through Immersive Sports, which streams in 8K with 180-degree views to create the feeling of sitting in the front row. Meta says more than 100 immersive live US sports events a year will be available from 2027, with partners including ESPN, TNT Sports, MLB, NBC Sports and UFC. For anyone who has ever watched a big game on a small phone screen, the idea of a virtual courtside view is an easy sell.
Gaming, From Hand Gestures To Xbox Cloud Gaming
Gamers are well looked after too. More than 75 games will be playable at launch using just hand gestures, with no controllers required. Players who want more can connect Touch Plus controllers to access Quest titles, and Xbox Cloud Gaming integration opens the door to hundreds of additional games streamed straight to the glasses.
Under the hood, the puck runs Qualcomm's Snapdragon Reality Elite chip, and Meta says the system delivers up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback. The puck also supports 45W fast charging, so topping up between sessions should be quick.
A Private Workspace And Hologram Calls
Meta VR Glasses are not just for play. Users can connect to a Windows PC or Mac and spread their work across multiple large virtual screens that only they can see. Full-colour passthrough lets you still see your desk, phone and surroundings, and any flat surface can become a virtual keyboard and touchpad without extra hardware.
Video calls get a futuristic twist as well. Hologram calling creates a photorealistic digital version of you with real-time expressions, and spatial audio places each voice where that person's hologram appears. It works across calling apps such as WhatsApp and Zoom, and people joining from a regular phone or computer see your hologram on their screen. Meta AI is built into the operating system, and the glasses can be controlled with voice, eye tracking and natural hand gestures.
