Apple iPhone Duo: First Foldable iPhone Launches at $1,999

Apple used its autumn hardware event to do something it hasn't done in years — introduce an entirely new iPhone form factor. The iPhone Duo, the company's first foldable phone, opens book-style into a 7.6-inch inner display that Apple calls the largest screen ever built into an iPhone, while a 5.4-inch outer display handles everyday use when the phone is closed.

Design and Build

Built from grade-5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish, the Duo is offered in two colorways — star white and night sky — and carries a passport-style folding hinge that Apple is positioning as its most significant iPhone redesign to date. Both the inner and outer displays feature ProMotion, Always-On support, and a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, closing much of the visual gap with the best screens already on the market.

Specs and Performance

Under the hood, the Duo runs Apple's new A20 Pro chip paired with a dual 16-core Neural Engine, built to handle the on-device AI workloads that now come standard with iOS. A dual-battery system is rated for up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display or 31 hours when using the larger inner screen. On the camera side, Apple fitted a 48MP Fusion Main camera with 2x optical zoom, a 48MP Ultra Wide lens, and a new FaceTime camera positioned under the inner display itself — a first for the lineup.

The phone ships with iOS 27 out of the box, bringing a redesigned Siri and deeper Apple Intelligence integration across both screens.

Price and Availability

Pricing starts at $1,999 for the base 256GB model, climbing with storage options up to 2TB — roughly double the cost of a standard flagship iPhone. Apple is also selling a $129 iPhone Duo Folio and a $79 case with a built-in kickstand as companion accessories.

Pre-orders open October 16, 2026, with the device reaching store shelves on October 23 in more than 70 countries at launch.

Part of a Bigger Lineup

The Duo wasn't the only announcement at the event — Apple also unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4, and AirPods 5 as part of a full product-line refresh. But it's the foldable that's dominating headlines and early hands-on coverage.

At twice the price of a flagship iPhone, the real question isn't whether the hardware impresses — early impressions suggest it does — but whether Apple can convince buyers beyond its most dedicated early adopters that a fold is worth the premium. With Samsung and Google both years into their own foldable lines, Apple's answer will say a lot about where the smartphone market heads next.
