OpenAI US vs OpenAI India: Where ChatGPT Earns Its Money and Where It Earns Its Users

The US is where ChatGPT earns its money, and India is where it earns its users. The two markets are similar in audience size but very different in revenue, age, price and how tight the competition is. Where the two are measured differently, the table says so, and it should be read for direction, not precise ratios.
Dimension | United States | India |
Audience size | About 205 million users (estimate) | About 100M weekly, 145 to 180M monthly; one estimate lists 198M "users" |
Share of global ChatGPT web traffic | 18.5% | 9.8% |
Position | Largest market | Second-largest by weekly users per OpenAI; one report has also called it the largest by users |
Revenue weight | Dominant | About 1% of global AI in-app revenue against about 20% of downloads |
Plus price | $20 a month | About Rs 1,499, roughly 10% below the US level; Pro about Rs 16,999, at US parity |
Entry tier | Free, then Plus | Go at Rs 399, free for 12 months from 4 November 2025; UPI supported |
User age | Ages 18 to 34 are 53% of users globally; over-35 share rising | Ages 18 to 24 send nearly 50% of messages; under-30s about 80% |
Work and coding intensity | Global benchmark: 30% of messages work-related | 35% work-related; Codex use about 3x the global median |
Engagement | Users spend about 21% more time a week on AI apps | Indian users have about 17% fewer sessions (all AI apps) |
Competitive intensity | ChatGPT's web share 58.3% against Gemini's 19.3%, about 3 to 1 | ChatGPT monthly users about 1.4 to 1.5 times Gemini's (145 to 180M against 105 to 118M); Jio bundles Gemini free for 18 months |
Corporate presence | Headquarters and main compute base | New Delhi office since August 2025; Mumbai and Bengaluru offices planned for later in 2026; 100 MW Tata capacity under way |
Brand perception data | US tracking survey: ChatGPT leads at 33.7% preference | No comparable study found |
What the comparison says
In the US, ChatGPT is a mature, high-revenue, high-share product that is losing points at the margin to Gemini. In India, it is a younger, student-heavy, work-and-coding-heavy audience served largely for free, in a market where its lead over Gemini is about half as wide, and where paid conversion is the open question.
Engagement tells the same story from another angle. Indian users open AI apps less often than US users, yet ask for more coding help and data analysis per message, which suggests a smaller number of sessions used for heavier tasks.
What OpenAI is doing about it
OpenAI's India office build-out, its Tata data-centre deal and its enterprise partnerships (TCS, Infosys, Razorpay, JioHotstar, PhonePe, CRED, MakeMyTrip) are aimed at turning that free audience into enterprise and developer revenue rather than waiting for mass consumer subscriptions. The pricing tells the same story: Plus is only about 10% cheaper in India than in the US, while Pro is priced at parity, so OpenAI is not trying to win India on high-end price.
A caution
US and India figures come from different sources and dates, and the US audience number is an estimate. The direction is reliable; the exact ratios are not.
